Step-by-Step Instructions for Authentic Thai Green Tea
  1. Toast 2 star anise pods and 5 cloves in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for 2–3 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Heat 1 cup of whole milk (or coconut milk) in a saucepan until steaming. Stir in toasted spices and 2 tablespoons of black tea leaves. Steep for 45 minutes.
  3. Strain the milk mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. While warm, stir in 1 ½ tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk and a pinch of kosher salt.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk 2 teaspoons of matcha green tea powder with ¾ cup of hot water until smooth and frothy.
  5. Assemble the drink by filling a tall glass with ice, pouring in the milk tea mixture, and layering the whisked matcha on top.
