Ingredients

For the Pie Crust
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour The foundation of your crust, providing structure.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for enhancing flavor; adjust to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds a delightful depth; fresh garlic can also be used if preferred.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Key for flavor and tenderness; keep it cold for best texture.
  • 6-8 tablespoons cold water Helps bind the crust; add a little at a time for the right consistency.
For the Meaty Filling
  • 1 pound ground beef The primary protein; lean (85-90%) is best to avoid excess grease.
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage Boosts flavor; use mild or spicy, or substitute with seasoned ground turkey.
  • 1 medium onion Freshly diced for aromatic depth; don’t skip this step!
  • 2 cloves garlic Freshly minced enhances the filling’s overall flavor profile.
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning Elevates taste; can be substituted with a mix of oregano, basil, and thyme.
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes For those who enjoy a kick; omit for a milder pie.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Adjust to suit your taste preferences.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Adjust to suit your taste preferences.
For the Sauce and Toppings
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes Forms the base for the savory sauce; fresh tomatoes can also do the trick.
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste A thickener that balances acidity in the sauce; crucial for texture.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar Calms acidity for a well-rounded sauce flavor.
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Essential for that stretch and gooeyness; it’s the star of the cheese pull!
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Adds richness; feel free to swap with your favorite cheese.
  • 1 cup pepperoni Classic topping; thick-cut for best results either layered in or on top.
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano While optional, it adds a lovely aroma to the final dish.
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese A finishing touch that enhances flavor depth and umami.

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie dish
  • Skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9-inch pie dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, salt, and garlic powder. Cut in cold unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water to form a dough. Roll it out and press it into the prepared pie dish, then trim excess dough and blind-bake for 7-8 minutes until just set.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage for approximately 6-8 minutes until cooked through. Drain excess grease and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté diced onion and minced garlic for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Stir in Italian seasoning, crushed red pepper flakes, and a pinch of salt and black pepper. Add ½ cup of crushed tomatoes.
  5. Layer half of your remaining pizza sauce on the blind-baked crust. Add half of the meat mixture, a layer of shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, followed by thick-cut pepperoni. Repeat these layers and finish with a final layer of cheese.
  6. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until cheese is melted and golden brown.
  7. Allow the pie to rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.
  8. Serve with a side salad or garlic bread.
